have you seen these cutbacks? April 9, 2009

MSN published an article covering the ten cutbacks you’ll see at work as the economic downturn continues. Here’s one of the most demoralizing of all:

Approximately 69% of employers have reduced their merit pay budgets, Watson Wyatt found, the majority in the past two months. Among those employers, the average projected raise was 1.7% for 2009, down from 3.7% last year.

At my last review, my boss said he had to fight to just get me a two percent merit raise, and that people who did good but not great work didn’t even get the standard our-paltry-attempt-to-care-about-cost-of-living increases that employees nationwide pretty much count on. Add that to furloughs, pay cuts, and ever more unpaid overtime as you try to do the jobs of the people who got fired, you’ll find your morale so low that even the “well, at least I have a job” excuse will come close to failing you.

Good luck.
